Christina Aguilera, the most famous person born in Staten Island, has been invited to sing the national anthem before a Brooklyn Cyclones game this upcoming summer at the home stadium in Coney Island. She gained success with hit singles “Genie in a Bottle”, “What a Girl Wants”, and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You). No word on whether she will accept or if be a blonde or brunette…hopefully will accept and be blonde. Christina and I have the same birthday but there is no word on where the party will be. The Dodgers will wear nostalgia baseball uniforms from the golden age of baseball for 6 home games this summer in Los Angeles. LA sucks move back to Brooklyn!

Wally Backman was hoping to become the new manager of the New York Mets but was promoted from Single-A to the team’s Double-A Binghamton affiliate. The former World Series Champion Met, 25 years ago and counting, was interviewed by Mets and passed over for Terry Collins, who has not managed in years. Backman lead the Cyclones Baseball Team to a first-place finish in the New York-Penn League last season and Tim Teufel, also on the 1986 Mets, moves up as the manager of Triple-A Buffalo. It is expected that Rich Donnelly will be named manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Other Cyclones notes: Beach Bum Auditions underway apply by March 24 and season tickets are on sale. The New York Aviators (19-12-2) of the Federal Hockey League (FHL, minor league) are currently in third place and play home games at the Aviator Sports and Events Center located at 3159 Flatbush Avenue. The New Jersey Nets Basketball Team (13-32) is planning to relocate to Brooklyn once the new Barclays Center arena is completed in the spring or summer of 2012.  The Center is expected to have ice which hopefully won’t give the sucky “looking for a new arena” Islanders any ideas…how does Kansas City sound and take the “never any talent trapping” Devils with you. Brooklyn is New York Rangers territory! The site of the arena is near where the Dodgers should be playing NOW…not in Los Angeles where evil Walter O’Malley moved the loveable bums after a plan was rejected and the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958. Never elected but powerful Robert Moses’ plan had other ideas for the land and wanted to build a new stadium where the Mets lose now. The Nets would be the first major professional sports team to play their home games in Brooklyn since the devastating move of the Dodgers. However don’t expect Carmelo Anthony to rot away in New Jersey for a year before the Barclays Center arena opens, he’ll be on Broadway by opening night October 2011.  South Brooklyners braved the frigid cold to fill the local watering holes to watch the Jets in the AFC Championship Football Game play against what beautiful actress and model Sienna Miller calls Shittsburgh. As the Stealers and non-registered sex offender “Big Goofy Looking” Ben Roethlisberger beat the Jets.

After having Game 2 rescheduled twice because of rainouts, the Cyclones bid to win their first undisputed New York-Penn League championship came to an end last night with a 5-1 loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats:

The Cyclones managed just five hits on Wednesday, with Darrell Ceciliani notching three by himself.  Cory Vaughn and J.B Brown accounted for the only other two hits by Brooklyn batters.  Ceciliani hit .474 in the postseason, and Joe Bonfe hit .333 to pace the Cyclones offense.

Starting pitcher Yohan Almonte allowed three runs – one earned – on seven hits in 4.2 innings.  Angel Cuan came on in relief of Almonte, and allowed two more runs in 2.1 innings.  Wes Wrenn held the Valley Cats scoreless over the final 2.0 innings, but Brooklyn could not mount a comeback.

The ValleyCats win the series, two games to none, bringing the now-Houston Astros affiliate their first championship since moving to Troy, and their first title since 1984, when they were known as the Little Falls Mets.

The Cyclones finished the regular season with a 51-24 record, best in their division by 12 games, and one win shy of their franchise record set in their inaugural season in Brooklyn in the 2001 season. Outfielder Darrell Ceciliani batted .351 to win the league batting title.

Woo hoo! Go Cyclones!

The Brooklyn Cyclones have just won Game 3 of the New York-Penn League semi-final against the Jamestown Jammers, by a score of 6-4. The Cyclones win the series, 2 games to 1, and advance to the final against the Tri-City ValleyCats, who won their series tonight in Batavia with a 1-0 victory.

The Cyclones and ValleyCats finished the regular season against each other, with the Cyclones winning the weekend series 2-1, but the ValleyCats win last Saturday was enough to edge them into the playoffs against Batavia.

Game 1 will be played in Troy, NY on Saturday. Game 2 will be in Coney Island’s MCU Park on Sunday, and Game 3 – if necessary – will be played in Coney Island on Monday.

The Brooklyn Cyclones tied Game 2 in the bottom of the ninth inning after blowing a three-run lead in the eighth, then tied the series with the Jamestown Jammers with a 12-inning, 9-8 victory.

The Cyclones had taken command of the game with a 4-run fifth inning, but the Jammers answered in the eighth with 4 runs of their own. The Cyclones closed a one-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning, and again in the bottom of the ninth, to stave off early elimination from the playoffs. Pinch runner ZeErika McQueen gave the Cyclones the winning run in the 12th, scoring from third after a wild pitch.

The third and final game of the New York-Penn League semi-final will be played Thursday night (7pm) at MCU Park in Coney Island.

The Brooklyn Cyclones lost Game 1 of the New York-Penn League semi-final to the Jammers last night in Jamestown, NY, by a score of 7-6. The Jammers, which needed to win their final four games to squeak into the playoffs, led 6-1 at one point, needed to add on a run in the bottom of the eighth inning after allowing the Cyclones to tie.

The Cyclones need to win tonight and Thursday night in Coney Island to avoid an embarrassing early exit for the NYPL’s first-place team.

The Brooklyn Cyclones will close out their second-best season in team history today with a 5pm game against the Tri-City ValleyCats (Troy, NY). The Cyclones have split their weekend series with the ValleyCats – last night’s 8-7 loss, which saw the Cyclones come back to tie the game twice before giving up a run in the ninth, dropped their record to 50-24.

Regardless the outcome of today’s game, the Cyclones will finish with the best record in the New York-Penn League by a country mile. They’ll start the playoffs against the NYPL wildcard – either the Williamsport Crosscutters (the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate) or the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins). The three-game semi-final starts Tuesday night in Williamsport/Jamestown, then moves to Coney Island on Wednesday and (if necessary) Thursday. For schedule and ticket information, see the Cyclones web site.

While the Cyclones clinched their division a week ago, the ValleyCats go into the season’s final game fighting for their playoff lives. A win against the Cyclones will give them the Stedler Division and a playoff berth against the Batavia Muckdogs (St. Louis Cardinals). A loss opens the door for the Connecticut Tigers (Detroit Tigers) to force the ValleyCats out of the playoffs.

When the Cyclones advance to the final, Game 1 will be played in Batavia/Troy/Norwich on Thursday or Friday, with Games 2 and 3 being played in Coney Island. (Ya got that, Great Pumpkin? I said When, not If.)

The defending NYPL champions, the Staten Island Yankees, go into Sunday’s games 15.5 games back of the Cyclones in the McNamara Division.

The  Brooklyn Cyclones have an eight game divisional lead and the best record at 31-15 (.674) and an impressive 18-4 home record led by Darrell Ceciliani hitting .376, the Single A short season ends Sunday September 5… and then the playoffs begin. Test your New York City baseball knowledge..
NYC Baseball legends Willie Mays, Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden all have 1 unique and very interesting fact in common…. can you name it ???

The 8th inning defensive collapse is home to the best defensive play we’ll probably see all year. True story.

The Brooklyn Cyclones have opened up the season with two straight wins over the Staten Island Yankees – including Saturday night’s 9-6 home opening victory – before losing the third game Sunday night in St. George, 2-1.

The Baby Mets in action. Playing home games in the sea breeze of Coney Island has to beat playing home games in Jamestown.

Post-game fireworks!

Brooklyn baseball originally began in 1883. Teams were known as the Brooklyn Atlantics, Bridegrooms, Grooms, Superbas, Robins, and Trolley Dodgers before officially becoming the Dodgers in the 1930s. In Brooklyn, the Dodgers played at Ebbets Field located in the Flatbush section on Bedford Avenue. Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball. He played his first game on April 15, 1947, for the Brooklyn Dodgers… the team won only one World Series which came in 1955.  Walter O’Malley had acquired majority ownership of the Dodgers in 1950 and wanted to build a new stadium in Brooklyn. New York politicians refused to let him build the Brooklyn stadium he wanted. The “REAL” Dodgers played their final game in Brooklyn on September 24, 1957…soon after and maybe to this day people in Brooklyn believe the 3 most evil men on earth were Stalin, Hitler and Walter O’Malley. So who do people in Brooklyn root for….Yankees or Mets? Mets “fans” say it’s one or the other…not both!! So I journeyed out to see each team’s new ball park over the last 14 months… May 2009 Yankee Stadium- AJ Burnett walks a batter in the first inning…the Yankee fans panic “Oh how could he walk him (as if the season was over).. too much passion? May 2009 Citi (bankrupt) Field.. Mets fans are constantly watching the scoreboard..hoping the Yankees are losing .. hello you paid money to watch a scoreboard not the game?..Yankee Stadium late season vs. Boston … ah again every pitch is life or death…Citi Field late season vs. hated Atlanta…one Mets fan yells “Yankees won’t win the World Series…will be swept by Angels in the first round !!” Well, i didnt pee’d or puked on..unlike Philly! Are there any Mets fans or Anti-Yankees fans in Queens? Subway Series 2010, I hung out with some Mets “fans”…ahhh the season is complete we beat the Yankees 2 out of 3 !!! Ya sure beats winning only 1 World Series since Watergate!
