The Fifth Avenue Festival in Bay Ridge is on Sunday, June 6 – less than three weeks away. And the marquee event will be the annual pizza eating contest held by Rocco’s Pizza at the corner of 79th Street. And hey – you don’t have to be a professional eater to join. Us amateurs can qualify by taking the Pizza Eating Challenge:

All potential participants for the 2010 Annual Brooklyn Pizza Eating Contest are welcome to take the Pizza Eating Challenge to qualify for the main event on Sunday June 6, 2010.

The Pizza Eating Challenge can be taken at Rocco’s Pizza on 5th located at 7818 5th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11209•718.238.7658.

The Pizza Eating Challenge, Challenges you to eat an 18″ large Pizza including crust in 8 minutes. Win and you will be entered into the 2010 Pizza Eating Contest (depending on your time). Loose and you will have to pay for pizza.

OMG. I want to try this. I’m not a professional pizza eater, but it is a minor hobby of mine. When I was growing up, my dad and I would fight over the “big half” of a large pie – you know, the six slices that were slightly larger than the other six slices by virtue of an errant stroke of the pizza cutter. It’s this sort of thing, along with skipping 12th-period gym class to go to McDonald’s with the Tims, that can probably explain the habits that have led to the extra 20 pounds I’ve put on in the last 16 months. But I figure this at least makes me qualified to give the Rocco’s Pizza Challenge a try. Who wants to see this?

“Brooklyn is now a republic, not a borough anymore.” So says our fearless leader, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, in his opening remarks at Sunday’s pizza eating contest at the Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Spring Festival.

pizzaHave you seen the weather forecast for this weekend? It looks (and say it with me in that high-pitched squeaky squeal) awww-sommme! There’s a ton of events going on, too, and it would be pretty easy to get yourself double- and triple-booked (go ahead, ask me how I know).

Well, I’ve narrowed my own attendence list down to these two (maybe):

The Brooklyn Half-Marathon: Begins at 8am in Prospect Park, makes two laps around Park Drive, runs down the length of Ocean Parkway, then along Surf Avenue and the Coney Island Boardwalk on its way to the finish line behind Brooklyn Union Gas Stadium (map).

I’m not sure where I will watch. I guess I’d like to see the climatic finish, and grab a morning hot dog to boot (the rule at Nathan’s is: get there before noon, or not at all)… but that won’t be until around 9:00 or 9:30, and I have treks to Queens and Billyburg penciled inked in for the afternoon and evening. So I might head up to the 8th mile instead – 18th Avenue and Ocean Parkway – to get it done early and move on to the rest of the day’s obligations.

The Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Spring Festival: I’ve been wanting to do this for a couple of years now. This year’s fest runs 20 blocks – from 65th to 85th Street. Holy moly guacamole!

The centerpiece (or “centerpiece” is what the Bay Ridge Journal says, anyway) is the pizza eating contest in front of Rocco’s Pizzeria at 3pm. Actually, if pizza is involved, it sounds like a centerpiece to me! Hey, do I get a seat at the table?
