Reminder: tonight, Councilman Recchia’s Tuesday night “concert” series switches gears, and will be showing Mamma Mia! The Movie at 8pm.

On Thursday, The B-52s will be bringing the free concert as part of the Summer Seaside Concerts. They will be joined by the former Go-Gos frontwoman Belinda Carlisle, because she’s awesome, too. That show starts at 7:30pm.

Asser-Levy Seaside Park is located at on Surf Avenue at West 5th Street.

You’ve probably heard this by now, but boo anyway! The Brooklyn Paper says:

Aretha Franklin’s two free shows here [this] week  — first on Aug. 9 at Wingate Field in Crown Heights, and then again on Aug. 12 at Asser Levy Seaside Park in Coney Island — have been canceled due to an unspecified injury that the singer claims to have suffered on Sunday [later revealed to be fractured ribs].

I’m personally a little indifferent – Aretha’s heyday is a little before my time and I had no plans to go to the show this week – but she was the biggest star on either slate, so I imagine this news was met with a great deal of disappointment.

I’d be sorely disappointed if anything happened to the B-52s/Belinda Carlisle concert on August 19. I’ve had my heart set on it for weeks. I’ll be there, even if it rains. Especially if it rains. Noah could be on the other side of the Boardwalk, packing them in two-by-two, and I’ll still be dancing to Love Shack in the mud (which I hear is pretty much how the B-52s last appearance at Asser-Levy went down). Sounds like Heaven On Earth to me.

So here’s hoping for no unfortunate incidents to beehive haircuts.

If you’re still looking for something to do tomorrow night, check out the outdoor movie at the Narrows Botanical Garden in Bay Ridge. This week’s movie – the last of the season – is The Blind Side, an obscure indie flick with an up-and-coming cast that’s become something of a cult classic an Academy Award-nominated film starring Sandra Bullock that everyone who sees it raves about. As usual, you’ll need to bring your own blanket or lawn chair. Popcorn and other refreshments will be sold, and you can bring your own snacks! (Sorry, no boozeamohol.)

Note: in the event of rain, the movie will be played on Friday. Current forecast calls for a chance of rain on Thursday, but a dry Friday evening. Check the Botanical Gardens web site for up-to-date information.

Reminder: The Beach Boys Band (Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and some random backup dudes) will be playing at Asser-Levy Seaside Park tomorrow night. The concert begins at 7:30pm. AND… Finding Nemo will be the outdoor movie at the Narrows Botanical Garden, starting at sundown. Sorry, no way to be in both places at once – you’ll have to choose one, or the other! Spectators to both are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Last week, Council Member Dominic Recchia announced the six-week Tuesday night concert/movie series at Asser Levy Seaside Park for this summer. While lacking the star power of Marty Markowitz’s Thursday night series, the Recchia series has five solid musical acts, and an outdoor movie thrown in for fun.

All show times – 7:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, July 13 – 7:30 p.m. – Art Lillard’s Heavenly Big Band (official site)
  • Tuesday, July 20 – 7:30 p.m. – The Boilermaker Jazz Band (video)
  • Tuesday, July 27 – 7:30 p.m. – SHOUT! The MOD Musical (video)
  • Tuesday, August 10 – 7:30 p.m. – The Bensen-Scott Big Band (official site)
  • Tuesday, August 24 – 7:30 p.m. – Kenny Vance & The Planotones (video)

Also, on Tuesday, August 17, there will be an 8pm showing of Mamma Mia! The Movie. This is great – I love outdoor movies, and I really want to see more of them in South Brooklyn this summer and in the years to come. I’d rather watch a Twilight Saga marathon for an entire week, and then be forced to read the Sookie Stackhouse series before going to see Mamma Mia, but hey, I hope the weather is nice!

The Village Voice has filled out the 14-band lineup for the 2010 Siren Festival with Holy Fuck and more. For the uninitiated: yes, Holy Fuck is a real band name. OK, so it isn’t the most popular or revered band in the lineup, but it is the most fun to say. (Go ahead – give it a try.) The Siren Festival takes place all day on Saturday, July 17, on two stages (W. 10th Street between the Cyclone and Luna Park, and Stillwell Avenue) near the Boardwalk. The full lineup is posted below and at the Village Voice.

In related news, The B-52s will be playing at the Thursday night concert series at Asser-Levy Seaside Park this August, but the Borough President’s office doesn’t want you to know that.

Marty Markowitz announced a Seaside Summer Concert Series lineup that includes Aretha Franklin, Belinda Carlisle, Brenda Lee, and George Thorogood & The Destroyers to a crowd at the YM-YWHA Israel festival last week. The full schedule is below, and the full details are available at news blog Sheepshead Bites.

As stated in the article, Markowitz asked Bites not to include the B-52s in the published lineup, for fear that the announcement may negatively impact sales of their July 6 appearance at the Highline Ballroom, a Manhattan music venue. But thanks to an “anonymous” commenter on Sheepshead Bites and “another” source contacted by BK Southie – “both” attendees of the YM-YWHA event – that information is now freely available.

On a personal note, I am glad to see Markowitz sees news bloggers such as Ned Berke at Sheepshead Bites as being on par with traditional media such as newspaper and TV reporters, and therefore expects bloggers to keep his secrets (especially publicly-announced secrets) from their readership, just like a traditional media reporter would.

Siren Festival Lineup (July 17)

  • Matt & Kim
  • Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
  • The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
  • Holy Fuck
  • Night Marchers
  • Surfer Blood
  • Harlem
  • Cymbals Eat Guitars
  • Earl Greyhound
  • Ponytail
  • Screaming Females
  • Wye Oak
  • Dom
  • Apache Beat

Seaside Concert Series Lineup

  • July 15 – Neil Sedaka, Brenda Lee
  • July 22 – The Beach Boys, The Happy Together Tour
  • July 29 – George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
  • August 5 – John Legend
  • August 12 – Aretha Franklin
  • August 19 – Belinda Carlisle, The B-52s
  • August 26 – Salsa By The Sea (Lineup TBD)

With five days to go to the scheduled opening, we’re kinda wondering… it’s gonna be ready on time, riiiiight? Photo credit: Brian Hedden

Site news: Stephanie11229 is the newest member of the BK Southie writing team. You can probably expect Stephanie to write about the swath of land from Sheepshead Bay to Coney Island. She joins myself and Nick Silver as the current regulars here. Be sure to check out her first post and say hi!

I have a hunch that Luna Park will be dominating the South Brooklyn headlines this week, and into the next.

  • More on the hoisting of the Luna Park entrance sign. You know, it looks like it needs more than five days of work to me, but pretty much every we talk to that’s close to the situation says the park will be ready for this Saturday morning. I don’t seen any signs of doubt on the Coney Island Message Board (the usual prognosticator of doubt), and the company line is a Saturday opening, a brief closure next week for some extra finishing touches, and everything in place by mid-June. (Amusing The Zillion, Coney Island USA, Brooklyn Paper)
  • More on the return of the John Strong sideshow – the first north-of-Surf amusement in six years – and the two competing sideshows. (Amusing The Zillion)
  • The Mayor’s commitment to Coney Island has not diminished, even in the face of massive layoffs in other areas of City government, noticeably the Department of Education. Note – I’m not sure yet if the $130 million Coney budget cited in the article also includes the $64 million amphitheater planned at Asser-Levy Seaside Park, which may play host to heavy metal concerts. (NY Observer via Bay Ridge Journal, Brooklyn Paper)
  • I don’t imagine one slips in a Yamaha percussion set through a chain link fence on the sly, meaning Coney Island squatlord Horace Bullard granted actual permission to Metric to film the last 30 seconds of their latest music video in front of the Playland building on the old Thunderbolt site. Bullard, who has held the land (and done nothing with it) since the 1980s, put the site on the real estate market last month. (YouTube, Brownstoner)

Not all of the news is happening in Coney this week:

The soon-to-open Luna Park, complete with the Eye Of Sauron attraction.

Hey, y’all. I took a sick day from the blog yesterday. Here’s your friendly, neighborhood South Blogistan.

  • I’m guessing ya probably heard by now, but New York Magazine rated the 50 most livable NYC neighborhoods. Bay Ridge (#12) was the highest-rated South Brooklyn neighborhood. Also representing are Sheepshead Bay (#27), Brighton Beach (#30), Sunset Park (#39). The BK Southie editor’s girlfriend’s neighborhood was listed at #5, while the BK Southie editor’s own neighborhood inexplicably did not crack the Top 50. (NY Magazine)
  • Opening Day in Gerritsen Beach, Little League style. (GerritsenBeach.net)
  • Construction work is taking place at the future Luna Park site day and night. Will the new park be Astroland 2.0? More importantly, is that a good thing or a bad thing? (Amusing The Zillion, Kinetic Carnival)
  • Speaking of Coney Island, Lola Star has a pretty good summary of what to expect event/programming-wise on the Rabbit’s Isle. (Lola Star’s Diary)
  • The Sheepshead Bay satellite of Cafe Glechik is putting on some finishing touches. (Sheepshead Bites)
  • Also, where to get Italian food in Sunset Park. Or where to avoid Starbucks. (The Sunset Park Blog)
  • Asser-Levy amphitheater update: it’s going to hog up pretty much the whole park. Community Board committee meeting on Wednesday! (Sheepshead Bites)
  • GBCares membership drive. Right, here. (GerritsenBeach.net)
