I am pleased to announce that BK Southie, the website that I’ve published for over two years to cover news and events from around southern Brooklyn, is being renamed and relaunched as Bay Ridge Odyssey. This ends the “soft re-launch” phase of the site that began in November when its six-month hiatus came to an end. The Odyssey will have the same mission of bringing you news, events, and photos relevant to the community, and do so specifically for Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

Keep reading this article on Bay Ridge Odyssey…

I wrote this e-mail to a friend to let them know about the re-launch (and derivatives of the same message to others). It sums up the story of the BK Southie re-launch in as few words as possible:

I am relaunching BK Southie. I started writing again last week. I’m still in “soft launch” mode, but this week I am starting to tell more and more people about it. I will admit, I will be focusing a lot more on Bay Ridge this go-around, but I will still include bits from all around South Brooklyn as I can get to them, including in Gravesend. If there’s anything that’s going on around you that you think I should write about, you can always just let me know. You know where to find me. Continue reading »

Six-months – it was either a long hiatus or a short retirement. Either way. BK Southie is coming back.

You’re welcome.*

Thank you, readers

Dear BK Southie Readers,

After two years and almost 500 stories, we’re signing off. It’s been a lot of fun, but at the end of the day (literally – there have been many times when I’ve been writing until 2am), it’s a bit much for me to manage.

I’ll continue to write elsewhere, where I can write at a comfortable pace and not have to fret about the whole site. If you want more info on that, check back here in a couple of weeks.

UPDATE (June 1, 2011): I’ll be contributing occasionally to the Bensonhurst Bean, the news blog started by Sheepshead Bites publisher Ned Berke.

A huge thanks goes out to the people who have helped write articles here – Peter, Kerry, Rita, Allan, Joanna, Stephanie, Kip, Emma, and of course to Nick and Arturo. Between the ten of them, they’ve written almost 150 of the stories on this site.

The biggest thanks goes to you. Thank you very much to all of you for reading.

-Brian

I’m going to be taking some time off from the site – not sure how long, but it will probably be measured in months rather than weeks. Nick and Arturo will still be here, writing excellent stories as they always do. I also want to take this opportunity to recruit some new writers to cover South Brooklyn’s incredible neighborhoods.

As I’ve said before, we only scratch the surface of what a South Brooklyn blog is capable of. My ultimate goal has been this: at least one person from each of the neighborhoods across South Brooklyn writing about news and events and other stories from their area, once or twice every week. As blog readers, we’d get more stories from a street-level perspective, without breaking the back of any one writer. Which is good for both reader and writer alike.

I know it’s unrealistic to recruit that many writers in a short period of time. At least not without paying them – as I’m sure you’ve noticed, we take no ad or subscriber revenue here. And it’s harder to follow “ultimate” goals when I myself am taking an extended break. So here’s my short-term goal:

Assistant Editor – If at all possible, I would like someone to take over some of the oversight and administration of the site. Nothing too strenuous – probably along the lines of giving new writers some direction on story topics or informal guides to style. Monitoring the “tips” e-mail inbox. Hitting the big blue “publish” button to move new writers’ stories to the front page. Writing the occasional witty remark on the Facebook page. If you’re an experienced writer or blogger with time and interest, let me know at tips@bksouthie.com.

Neighborhood Contributors – Here’s the roster of neighborhood beats, along with the available spots. As you can see, there are plenty. Would I like to fill all of them someday? Yes. Do I think that’s practical right now? No… but let’s see if we can get five of these spots filled, which would make seven writers along with Nick and Arturo.

Topic Contributors - If you’re interested in writing about a subject that reaches across neighborhoods, let me know. And if you’d rather go in the direction of the ultra-niche – for instance, writing ONLY about music in a specific neighborhood – that would be cool, too. Along those lines, it would be nice if someone could pick up the weekly Aviators roundup and/or the weekend subway alerts.

If you’re interested, please contact us at tips@bksouthie.com.

We’ve made a number of factual mistakes lately (see: here, here, here, and here). Once was from carelessness, once from a misunderstanding, and a couple of times it kinda wasn’t out fault. But getting it right matters to us, and we’re sorry for the run of errors.

I mean, we’re all just amateurs here. We all have day jobs. Sometimes we do just kind of run-and-gun it. Plus we’re sarcastic and we talk smack sometimes. So I suppose that may seem like we’re not taking things seriously.

Here’s the thing: if we care enough to write about it, we care about getting the facts right.

We also care about owning up to our mistakes when they do happen. If we screw something up, we aren’t going to whitewash it. We’ll tell you we got something wrong. We don’t have a set policy for how we do it – sometimes we’ll just post the correction along with the original story, and sometimes we’ll change the story while letting you know that we changed it.

Short story is, we’re not perfect, and we won’t pretend to be, but we’ll try our best the first time around. Thank you, everyone, for your support.

Announcing a new way to contribute your South Brooklyn pictures – we’ve created a new pool at Flickr for South Brooklyn photos! Take a photo recently that you’d like to submit for possible publication? If you’re on Flickr, just add it to the pool.

This time of year, we’re always looking for photos for our Holiday Lights series. Send us your Holiday Lights pictures! Tell your friends! Tell your friends’ friends! But the new Flickr pool is for all South Brooklyn photos, not just Christmas pics. Hope you enjoy.

As always, you can also submit your photos the “old-fashioned” way (sending them via e-mail to tips@bksouthie.com).

BK Southie on Facebook

I’ve started a new Facebook page for BK Southie. It’s the kind of page that you “like” as opposed to the page that you’re “friends” with. Don’t worry – you’ll always be my friends. But having a “friends” page meant having two different Facebook IDs, and for someone who Loves & Hates The Facebook at the same time as I do, one ID is plenty.

I’ve already spent a little time to make it more awesome than the old one, as you’ll find the bksouthie.com stories get updated on the new FB page pretty much right away.

The old “friends” page will be dying a relatively quick death, so please click over to the new page and “like” it. Or “like it like it,” if you’re so inclined. (And share it with your friends if you’re really in a good mood.)

Quick FYI: BK Southie has created a new e-mail address specifically for hot news tips or event tips you think would be of interest of our readers. You can now contact us at tips@bksouthie.com. If you’re sending photos (and by all means – please send photos!), let us know if we should credit you by name, screen name, or anonymously.

You can also send tips via our Facebook page, if you prefer.

In case you haven’t figured it out, BK Southie is on vacation for Memorial Day. That’s right, I’m paying my respects to those who died for our freedoms by sitting on my rear end for a whole freakin’ week. God bless America!

Hey – you’ve got to remember to come back here on Monday morning. You can expect your usual dose of South Blogistan at 7am, but the next post after that is going to be AWE-SOME. Definitely worth your time. A little something in the giveaway department. So I expect to see you here on Monday. 9am sharp!
