State Senator Carl Kruger, who faces corruption and conspiracy charges, turned himself in to Federal agents today. Sheepshead Bites’ Ned Berke reports that these are new charges that are “unrelated to an existing FBI probe” against Kruger concerning Rasputin night club owner Michael Levitis and “an alleged influence peddling scheme.” Kruger is the top ranking Democrat on the State Senate Finance Committee.  He represents State Senate District 27, which includes Mill Basin, Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Midwood, Madison, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, as well as parts of Borough Park and Bensonhurst.

Sheepshead Bites: Kruger To Surrender To Feds On Corruption Charges

UPDATE: Sheepshead Bites has provided a link to the 53 page criminal complaint against Kruger which includes counts of conspiracy, corruption and money laundering as well as accepting over $1 Million in bribes.

Sheepshead Bites: Carl Kruger Charged With Accepting $1 Million In Bribes

Maybe I’m being just a teensy bit cynical here, but here’s the description of tonight’s episode of Blue Bloods, just a week after the USAG’s bust of over 100 alleged Italian mobsters:

“Family Ties” – When the son of a Russian gangster is killed at his own engagement party, Danny delves into the world of the Russian mob and the family politics that exist.  Meanwhile, Erin is thrown into a high-profile corruption case, on blah blah blah blah blah.

Love the teaser. Flashy lounge, exploding vans, code-of-silence, and leopard-print coats. I guess this is supposed to tide us over until the Lifetime show?

Mayor Bloomberg cleaned up Manhattan but left Brooklyn under the snow for days. Brighton Beach has abandoned cars, trucks, buses left in the street.
Parts of Brighton Beach Ave have no cleared sidewalks, people are dangerously walking in the traffic of an unplowed street, Ned Berke of Sheepshead Bites says Sheepshead Bay is no better off.. take a look

Also,  the MTA had shutdowns of the subway lines Q N D for portions of last 3 days. Jay Walder and MTA raised fares today anyway.

Robert Segarra says Park Slope is not much better also with a stuck and abandoned bus.

In the aftermath of the recent storm, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has received hundreds of calls and emails from constituents frustrated by their attempts to contact 311 and air their concerns. All complaints have been forwarded to the New York City Department of Sanitation. Brooklynites may continue to voice their concerns regarding snow removal by contacting the BP’s office at 718-802-3777 or askmarty@brooklynbp.nyc.gov

In the 80′s Jack Laboz built a fence to prevent the general public from his large house along the waterfront. In December 1993, a State court ruled in favor to allow the fence to remain.  Brooklyn leaders are pushing a public-promenade plan that would reconnect neighborhoods of Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach. It has been reported that under one proposal, the fence be replaced with a new promenade. Mark Zustovich of the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office emailed me to clear up this issue, “This is just one of several proposals in a draft being considered by City Planning and discussed by the Borough Board, on which the borough president sits. It is only a draft, and City Planning will make a final determination based on public input and other considerations. As part of this process, the Borough Board helps City Planning make sure as many areas of the city are considered.”

It has ben reported that reconstruction of the Coney Island boardwalk (and extended to Brighton Beach) will cost $15 million, thanks to the federal stimulus funds However should the famous Coney Island boardwalk be renamed…cementwalk?

Shhh!..The New York Jets have the best record in the NFL and gave the beat down to Tammy Brady with his stupid Justin Bieber haircut and the New England “18-1 can’t videotape” Patsies.  The New York Giants have  rebounded and won 3 in a row to be a top of their division. How about a NY NY Super Bowl! So where is the best place to watch NFL Sunday in South Brooklyn? Perhaps you have a favorite watering hole? Or maybe you sit on your lazy ass in your mother’s house? Let us know…free advertisement here… free advertisement here…

Keep it down!

That’s what Mayor Bloomberg said!
Recently, two synagogues filed suit against the city and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz believing the popular Seaside Summer Concert Series at Asser Levy Park on Surf Avenue was violating noise code. Use of electronic sound amplification equipment within 500 feet of houses of worship during hours of worship is not acceptable the code states. Maybe you are wondering… concert series just finished its 31st season why are complaints coming out now?  Or maybe you believe in the separation of church and state? Or maybe you think this is not covered by the first amendment? Or why not move the concert series to MCU Park?

On June 28, 2010 an 82-year-old woman was killed crossing the corner of Brighton Beach Avenue and Brighton 3rd Street. Unfortunately this is not a rare occurrence. October 8, 2008 a pedestrian was hit and killed on Ocean Parkway at Brighton Beach Ave. May 25, 2008, a 40-year-old woman was fatally hit by a car while crossing Brighton Beach Avenue.  September 17, 2003 a woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver as she turned onto Brighton Beach Avenue from Brighton Fourth Street. Queens Blvd is unknown as the “Boulevard of Death” … Brighton Beach Avenue is the “Avenue of Death”? So how do we prevent these needless traffic accidents? Speed bumps, security cameras, steep fines, stiff penalties… ???

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he is leaning toward a smoking ban on beaches and in parks in New York City. “When you ask people in parks or on beaches they say they just don’t want smokers there,” “People take their cigarette butts and packages and just throw them away.” Bloomberg said. DO IT MIKE!!! He is right on this issue…people just throw their butts and other shit all over the once pristine beaches. People should be fined for smoking especially with children around…as well as leaving fast food wrappers and cups on beach to blow around and end up in the ocean water. People that leave and break glass bottles on the beach should spend the night in the tombs. OK…too harsh? How about mandatory 8 hr community service for the litterbugs to clean up after the unsanitary litterbugs…what do you think??

What do film stars Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Rhea Perlman, Steve Buscemi, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano, Jackie Gleason, the best comedy team of all times – the 3 Stooges (brothers: Moe, Shemp and Curly), musicians Lena Horne, Stephanie Mills, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Carole King, Pat Benatar, Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Biggie Smalls, former New York Yankees and Mets manager Joe Torre, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, politicians Shirley Chisholm, who became the first black woman to be elected to Congress, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Joan Bader Ginsburg have in common? All were all born in Brooklyn.  “Judge Judy” Judith Sheindlin grew up in Brooklyn, Founder of the popular fitness club, Lucille Roberts, immigrated to Brooklyn from the then Soviet Union. Spike Lee was born in Atlanta and moved to Brooklyn at a young age while Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn and moved out at a young age (he could not handle it!)Spending portions of their childhood in Brooklyn are Lauren Bacall, Mickey Rooney, Mary Tyler Moore and Mae West. Ok Lets focus on South Brooklyn, Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld, was born in Sheepshead Bay. Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer and NFL legendary coach Vincent Lombardi grew up in Sheepshead Bay. In Brighton Beach singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka was born and Mel Brooks previously resided. The Neil Simon play, “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, film adaptation was set against the backdrop of Brighton Beach in 1937 and the films “Little Odessa” and “Two Lovers” are both set in Brighton Beach.  Perhaps the most famous residents of Coney Island are fictional. “The Warriors” Walter Hill’s 1979 GREAT cult classic film follows the progress of a street gang as they get framed for killing a powerful gang leader and then have to find, battle and fight their way from the Bronx  to home turf Coney Island with many different creative and artistic gangs chasing them. In Woody Allen’s 1977 classic “Annie Hall”, as a child Alvy Singer lived in Coney Island in a house that was built under the classic Thunderbolt rollercoaster that shook when in route. “The Great Gatsby” invites Nick (not Silver) to go to Coney Island. The 1917 film “Coney Island”, starring Buster Keaton, was set in Coney Island. The video for One of Us by Joan Osborne was shot in Coney Island. The Three Stooges made several references to Coney Island in there classic short comedy routines…and list goes on and on.
