Jersey-based rockers The Benjamins will be playing tonight at The Wicked Monk (8415 5th Avenue), from 10pm until the wee hours of the morning.

Founded in 1999, the band’s bio says: “While maintaining top cover act status with fans everywhere, the band made a smooth transition into becoming a successful original act. After adding original songs into their cover show performances and gaining positive response, the band wrote, produced, and released, ‘GO’, the band’s first full-length album, which was released in May of 2004.”

A cover band playing original music. I like them already.

This band plays all over the tri-state area all of the time, but they don’t seem to play in Brooklyn much at all. Though I can imagine if they don’t fit in with the North Brooklyn music scene, which only likes bands playing cover music if they do so ironically. This would be a good time to hear them play!

The Strivelli Players & Ridge Repertory Company have two more weekends in their three-weekend run of A Sixties Kind of Love: A Musical Tale. According to the Strivelli web site, “this musical love story is filled with memorable hits of the 1960′s and is guaranteed to have you & your friends dancing in the aisles!”

The performances are at the Bay Ridge Jewish Center on the corner of 4th Avenue and 81st Street. The remaining dates are:

  • This weekend: November 12 @ 8pm, November 13 @ 2pm
  • Next weekend: November 19 @ 8pm, November 20 @ 2pm

Tickets are $20.

Dear Bay Ridge Bars,

It’s time someone combined the two great loves of the Bay Ridge music scene – cover bands and karaoke.

Live band karaoke.

This needs to happen.

Thank you.

Legendary Brooklyn band, Billy Bryan & The Ax Grinders, whose members include locals Jimmy Deil, Paul Deagle, Upton Bailey and Billy J Bryan, have returned with a new song and video entitled “I Believe in “Rock and Roll” – which is a followup to their very successful single “I Can’t Wait” – and pays homage to the music,  musicians, and individuals of their youth who played a big part in influencing our lives. For more than 30 years, Coney Island has had FREE summer concerts at Asser-Levy Park. However, this will come to an end because people found the concerts to loud. Opponents of Marty Markowitz’s amphitheater plans used the city sound ordinance to get the concert series evicted altogether. Not sure why people started bitching about this after all this time. Performers have included Billy Ocean, Peter Frampton, Blondie, Huey Lewis… not exactly the loud monsters of rock tour!

I live next to the park, and the concerts are not too loud. And they’re not on Saturday or Sunday mornings – the shows were on Tuesday and Thursday Nights.  It is easy to confuse the decibel levels of Kenny Vance & The Planotones with AC/DC, right? Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hasn’t found a new spot and said the concerts would happen in the future. Let us pray, especially in a bad economy, a new spot is found for free quality entertainment.

For any of our dear readers that are looking for a thrifty way to kick off Saturday night amusements in Bay Ridge, the brooklynONE: Jazz Ensemble has just the event for you. The concert will begin at 8:00 PM at 461 99th Street – the charming St. John’s Parish Hall. The group will be performing jazz standards at a truly equitable price: “Pay What You Can.” The ensemble prides themselves on their ability to make performances affordable for those looking for a way to spend an evening in style without spending a fortune. The venue will feature snacks and coffee (and talent!), so please make a donation if you’re able.

Eddie Money will be playing at Aviator Sports complex this Saturday night for a Wounded Warrior Project benefit.

I will admit to having forgotten this song until I was doing some quick research for this article.

But I’m glad I remember it now. Eighties’ music rocks.

Prices range from $25-$45 – see the Aviator web site for details.

Reminder: The Beach Boys Band (Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and some random backup dudes) will be playing at Asser-Levy Seaside Park tomorrow night. The concert begins at 7:30pm. AND… Finding Nemo will be the outdoor movie at the Narrows Botanical Garden, starting at sundown. Sorry, no way to be in both places at once – you’ll have to choose one, or the other! Spectators to both are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Stephanie11229 contributed to this article. Her complete Siren Festival preview – with more videos and more commentary – is available at her rock-n-roll blog, Hope For Yesterday. She’ll tell you which bands are worth looking out for, whereas you’ll find I’ll tell you which bands are easy targets for a sarcastic blogger.

The Siren Festival – the two-stage, all-day music rock-out organized by The Village Voice – will be this Saturday, July 17 in Coney Island. This is the day thousands of hippie kid North Brooklynites pretend to notice Coney Island and South Brooklyn for something other than the beach and the Cyclone. It’s also one of the few times South Brooklyn gets to enjoy bands playing original music that didn’t have their heyday in the 1970s (sorry, Aretha).

Matt & Kim take top billing on the Main Stage (W. 10th Street between the Cyclone and Luna Park). This Williamsburg keyboard-and-percussion duo is the band crush du jour of North Brooklyn’s Hipster class. And that’s not at all meant as an insult. (Yes, it is.) (No it’s not.) (Yes. Yes, it is.) But we can’t hate them because they’re the proud parents of a baby boy! girl! album!.. They made an album together and compared it to childbirth – oy vey!
