The publisher of this web site grew up in Western New York. Be nice to him about this play.

Henry Hynoski 28, New England Patriots 0.

I just thought I’d lead off with my prediction for the game. I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’m almost certain that’s how the game will unfold.

Where do you want to watch the game this year? I’m keeping it simple for myself – will just be my son and I at home. I hosted an apartment party last year, but can’t really be bothered with the hassle this year. Pizza from DaVinci’s, and I’ll probably fry my own Buffalo wings. Thinking I’ll go with red wine over beer. Yeah, man: pizza, Buffalo wings, wine, and football. Life is grand.

Of course, if it weren’t for children who are too young to go out to bars*, I’d probably be going out Sunday night. It’s fun to see the Super Bowl in a bar already frequented by one of the participating teams’ fans, i.e. watching last year’s game in a Steelers bar. For this year’s game, I don’t think Giants bars are going to be so hard to find. They’ll be in the yellow pages under “bars.”

*I’ve been going out to watch sports in bars since I was 16. My dad thought it would be nice if I could watch him shoot pool. I just wanted to be in a place that got the channel that was carrying the hockey game.

In fact, I might think about going to one of these places.

  • Lone Star Bar & Grill (8703 5th Avenue) – Free buffet during game, $50 drink bracelet or pay-as-you-go. Early bird (noon-3pm) drink special: $3 domestic, $4 imports. Raffles & giveaways.
  • The Wicked Monk (8415 5th Ave) – $35 buffet and open bar, or pay-as-you-go. Buffet includes flank steak, Buffalo wings, pork kebabs, salmon oreganata, chili, grilled corn with chipotle butter, and Mediterranean salad (which is Turkish for “Greek salad”). Prizes and giveaways. Post-game karaoke.
  • Yellow Hook Grille (7003 3rd Avenue) – $25 unlimited draft beer
  • The Pour House (7901 3rd Avenue) – $45 open bar and free buffet. Giveaways, snowboard raffle
  • Delia’s Lounge (9224 3rd Avenue) – $60 open bar and food (reservation). Herb crusted lamb chops, Buffalo wings, sliders and fries.

Where will you be watching?

The Bay Ridge Historical Society is releasing a new book, titled Bay Ridge, Etc., starting tomorrow, Thursday, January 12th. The book will sell for $20.00, with the proceeds going to the Bay Ridge Historical Society, a nonprofit, non-sectarian community-based, state-chartered educational organization.

The Yellow Hook Grill (there’s some Bay Ridge history for ya, mate) will be hosting a book launch party that day at 11am, according to the Bay Ridge Journal, for “business and community leaders and local media representatives.” I’d love to go myself, as a member of the local media. But since I almost certainly can’t. If there are any readers who are interested, and would be willing to take pictures, please let me know (brian@bksouthie.com), and I can give you my blessing to go as a member of this local media outlet.

P.S. I don’t think they’re really turning away any non-media, non-community-leader types. That’s just my plea for someone to go take pictures for me. Please, someone, go to this and take pictures for me.

Pecan pie is my dad's Kryptonite. If he went to the Bay Ridge Pie Social this Sunday, he would be literally rendered powerless against bald criminal masterminds with an unhealthy obsession with real estate. Photo: Flickr user stu_spivack

Here’s a fun fact: November hates me. More specifically, November hates my waistline. In addition to the battles that everyone else must face – day-after Halloween candy sales and the American day of gluttony and bad football known as Thanksgiving, I also get to celebrate the birthdays of two close family members eight days apart. Just got one out of the way. Almost – there’s still half-a-sheet of ice cream cake in the freezer.

And now there’s a pie social in Bay Ridge. November just keeps piling on. Continue reading »

Men in Black 3 will be filming in Coney Island from May 2 through 6, and the production has leased “the Grashorn” – Coney Island’s oldest building. A construction crew is working on the building located on Surf Ave to use as their location headquarters. The production company is decorating some of the buildings on Surf Avenue with a retro 60′s look, and there will be filming on the famous Boardwalk and in Wonder Wheel Park.

Some of the locals have been cast as extras. However, the film is not set for release until May 2012.

The Grashorn Building, which has been sitting unattended, is expected to be rented out afterward.

Suzanne Corso: MyFoxNY.com

Aw, man, I totally missed this. That’s why I get for not slavishly following my Facebook feed. But hey, Suzanne Corso was at Boulevard Books and Cafe in Dyker Heights last night promoting her new book, Brooklyn Story. Via Examiner.com: “The story is one woman’s journey from her shackled life in Brooklyn towards a promise of paradise that awaits her in Manhattan. Corso states that Brooklyn Story is more than 20 years in the making and is already in the process of becoming a motion picture.”

Here’s a video of Corso on Fox 5 yesterday morning.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club will take their annual New Year’s swim a little over a week from now, on Saturday, January 1, at 1pm. A little dip in the frozen pool sounds like a great way to manage that NYE hangover!

If you go, be sure to check out Ruby’s Bar & Grill, one of nine Boardwalk establishments to be served with eviction notices at the end of October. Despite the uninvitation from their landlord, Ruby’s plans to open for business at 10:30am.

Also, while you’re there, take a gander at the Shore Theater, the city’s newest landmark. And one of the few buildings in Coney Island that apparently won’t be torn down.

Saturday, December 11, New Yorkers can take part in the NYRR Jingle Bell Jog; this race is expected to raise more than $75,000 for health programs in New York City public schools. Each race entry includes a long-sleeve technical shirt, jingle bells for runners’ shoes, and seasonal post-run refreshments. Each entry will also allow one student to participate in NYRR’s school-based youth health and fitness programs, so all runners can run and jingle knowing that they are giving a child the gift of running this holiday season. New York Road Runners serves more 10,000 children in 84 Brooklyn schools via its Young Runners and Mighty Milers programs and through events that include Youth Jamborees and a Developmental Track & Field Series. For more information, visit http://www.nyrrf.org/
