Yesterday, the Daily News profiled a romance between a Bay Ridge woman and the firefighter who helped put out the December 2005 apartment fire.

That night, [Diane] Sanchez went back to the waterlogged apartment to retrieve some belongings, then went to O’Sullivan’s Bar and Grill to unwind.

The day’s Daily News was on the bar, and Sanchez got to talking to suds slinger Eddie Curtis about her headline-grabbing ordeal.

Sitting at the other end of the bar was [Kevin] Molloy. Sanchez had no idea he was one of the guys who came to her rescue the day before, though he recognized her.

“Kevin remembered me because it was 10 days before Christmas,” she said. “He remembered the look on my face.”

“She looked like she was crying,” Molloy recalled.

When Curtis found out the Ladder 109 member had responded to Sanchez’s apartment, he dragged the firefighter down to her end of the bar.

“I think you should thank this man,” Curtis told her.

“Why?” Sanchez asked.

“I was at your fire yesterday,” Molloy explained.

This would make a great episode of Rescue Me. I mean, you can’t have something this sweet on TV without changing some major facts and adding some drama – sweet is boring! No, the TV/Rescue Me version of this story should have Molloy character portrayed by one of the playboy firefighters, and that character would be juggling two other chicks at the same time. And the Sanchez character would really be an arsonist who set fires specifically to be picked up by firefighters, because Rescue Me always wrote strong, female characters that way. I bet a good writer could milk this story arc over two or three episodes. There, I just wrote a TV script.

Assuming this episode hasn’t already been written.

In all honesty, congrats to the lucky couple, and I hope no one shamelessly lifts their story from the headlines for the sake of TV drama – sounds like a perfect story just the way it is.

Examples of Brooklyn’s famous countryside mansions overlooking rolling hills and scattered trees.

Or maybe it’s just the tilework at the 86th Street R-train station.

Jersey-based rockers The Benjamins will be playing tonight at The Wicked Monk (8415 5th Avenue), from 10pm until the wee hours of the morning.

Founded in 1999, the band’s bio says: “While maintaining top cover act status with fans everywhere, the band made a smooth transition into becoming a successful original act. After adding original songs into their cover show performances and gaining positive response, the band wrote, produced, and released, ‘GO’, the band’s first full-length album, which was released in May of 2004.”

A cover band playing original music. I like them already.

This band plays all over the tri-state area all of the time, but they don’t seem to play in Brooklyn much at all. Though I can imagine if they don’t fit in with the North Brooklyn music scene, which only likes bands playing cover music if they do so ironically. This would be a good time to hear them play!

A parked car on the Shore Road is hit by a speeding driver (dramatization).

It’s hard out here for a pimped-out ride! Or even just a regular ride. In separate and mostly unrelated articles this week, the Brooklyn Paper has reported on damages to parked cars in the northwest section of Bay Ridge. The most recent incident occurred Monday night, when “up to 40″ cars on 71st and 72nd Streets had their tires slashed. Some residents were particularly annoyed that the slashings came a day after a Park Slope tire shop dropped literature in the area. (The shop denied involvement, pointing out that their specialty is rims, and that they don’t fix flats.) This comes a day after the Paper covered a dangerous traffic situation on the Shore Road that sees motorists speeding past curves – and sometimes losing control and striking parked cars (pictured).

We at BK Southie condemn this apparent rise in random street violence against our borough’s innocent cars. That said…

Cars with alarms so sensitive that the vibrations from the Staten Island Ferry horn set them off totally have it coming.

Not exactly real or Memorex, but a nifty image of the globe lights at night.

Bay Ridge Jewish Center will hold its Winter Flea Market on Sunday, December 11, from 9am-4pm. Over 40 vendors will sell new & used items, collectibles, jewelry, crafts & more. Admission for buyers is free (looks like sellers can get a table for $35). And refreshments!

The BRJC web site promises there will be “something for everyone.” If it has an opportunity for me to put money towards someone in the community instead of The Crazy Target Lady… I’m game!

The Bay Ridge Jewish Center is on the corner of 4th Avenue and 81st Street.

The Crazy Target Lady has single-handedly turned me off to shopping both (1) between Halloween and Martin Luther King’s birthday and (2) at Target, anytime, for any reason. However, I whole-heartedly approve of going to the movies during the extended Thanksgiving weekend.

I especially approve of the Alpine. It ain’t the fanciest movie house in New York City, but it works just fine for me, and it’s ticket prices are a throwback to 1999 to boot.

P.S. Anyone who grew up on Jim Henson needs to see The Muppets. Also, see it here.

The Hinsch Luncheonette, located on 5th Avenue near the intersection with 86th Street, will reopen next Monday, November 28, according to a report by the Home Reporter & Sunset News. New owners Gerard Bell, Lola Bell, and William Gardella made the announcement at a meeting of the 68th Precinct Community Council according to the report. Gardella and the Bells – who own Skinflints along with a fourth partner – purchased the landmark diner after a sudden closing in late September by former owner John Logue. Logue cited general economic problems as a reason for the closure according to an earlier report by the Brooklyn Paper / Brooklyn Daily, which also noted that the closure was triggered by a Department of Health inspection.

I went to the Bay Ridge Pie Social at The Art Room yesterday. In related news, I can be found at the gym everyday this week except Thanksgiving – that day, expect to see me on my bicycle for an hour or two. Continue reading »

Household trash - ur doin' it wrong

Two weeks ago, the Home Reporter and Sunset News reported that seven-day trash pickup is to resume on the commercial avenues in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights – Fort Hamilton Parkway and 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 13th Avenues. The Department of Sanitation claims the move will not cost them any more money. The Community Board 10 District Manager, Josephine Beckmann, told the Home Reporter that the new DoS plan was promising.

Contrast that news from this bit from the Bensonhurst Bean yesterday – 18th Avenue from 65th Street to 75th Street (former Santa Rosalia country) remains trashcan-less, much to the dismay of merchants along the strip. Continue reading »
