AVP didn’t return to Coney this summer, but Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Show did. South Brooklyn had no express train to and from (plus sucky service).  Rats! Animal Planet came to Brighton Beach and Happy Hour too! Wrestling in MCU Park, Biologists working with the federal Agriculture Department killed Prospect Park’s geese with lethal doses of carbon dioxide. Chestnut Wins with 54 Hot Dogs. Brooklyn is boiling!!! …Tough to remember a day that did not hit 90 in July 2010. The Cyclones made to the league championship, MTA Fare hikes, KamaSutra opened in Sheepshead Bay.  Two synagogues filed suit against the city and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz believing the popular Seaside Summer Concert Series at Asser Levy Park is too loud. The wonder wheel was built in 1920 celebrated it’s 90th birthday.  Feeling poorer? The median income in Brooklyn is at $43,166 compared to the citywide median of $50,033. The Chilean Miners should be TIME’s Person of the Year 2010 after that the list sucks except for maybe Mark Zuckerberg.  The other sucky candidates include Julian ASS-ange, Lady Gaga, LeBron James, Steve Jobs, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin.  But who should be South Brooklyn’s Person of the Year 2010?? Brian Hedden BK Southie Publisher & Editor, Mallory Hagan, Miss Brooklyn 2010, “John” owner KamaSutra Sheepshead Bay, Coney Island Dancers,  Robert Segarra Jack of all trades, Dave Gold politican and producer, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, Luna Park Development Company The Zamperla Group,  Joey “Jaws” Chestnut Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Winner, Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman, Carol Albert former owner of Astroland amusement park. Paterson dismisses Norman Seabrook

As a member of the MTA board, Norman Seabrook was the only voice for the working class man.  That useless governor’s sad action of removing him from the board is a slap in the face to people trying to make ends meet these days. Seabrook  had the guts to speak and tell the truth about the MTA and it’s mismanagement that leads to a whopping unfair fare increase. New York City has a nitwit mayor who tells us not to eat salty soups, drink sugary drinks, etc instead of fighting for the working class man. So I asked Norman about future plans and he responded by saying “Thank you for your kind words I will continue to fight for the people of this city and state, the best to you and yours during this season and in the future.” By the way the MTA raises fares December 30, 2010

The first installment of the 2010 Holiday Lights photo series is here! This year, we’re leading off with the epicenter of holiday light displays, Dyker Heights. It’s like the Downtown North Pole over here, right down to the traffic. The full photo set continues below the fold.

Do you have any photos you want to contribute? For the next two weeks, we’ll be posting photos of holiday decorations from all across South Brooklyn. If you want to contribute, you can e-mail your photos to tips@bksouthie.com, OR you can add them to the group’s brand new Flickr photo pool.

To give you an idea of how elaborately decorated the homes in this part of the neighborhood are, I would describe this impressively festive home as modestly decorated. Continue reading »

Announcing a new way to contribute your South Brooklyn pictures – we’ve created a new pool at Flickr for South Brooklyn photos! Take a photo recently that you’d like to submit for possible publication? If you’re on Flickr, just add it to the pool.

This time of year, we’re always looking for photos for our Holiday Lights series. Send us your Holiday Lights pictures! Tell your friends! Tell your friends’ friends! But the new Flickr pool is for all South Brooklyn photos, not just Christmas pics. Hope you enjoy.

As always, you can also submit your photos the “old-fashioned” way (sending them via e-mail to tips@bksouthie.com).

Christmas Trees at the Sweet Peet nursery on New Utrecht Avenue. Photo by Brian Hedden.

No, this tree stand is not a part of CVS. I know they branch out into different types of decorations during the holidays, but they haven’t branched out into trees.

Yet.

Egbert Benson was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States

Have you ever wondered how Bensonhurst got it’s name? Before Bensonhurst became a neighborhood of semi-detached houses and apartment buildings it was farmland, and the Benson family was one of its largest landowners. Two of the most prominent and interesting members of the family were Egbert and Arthur Benson.

On Wednesday Jaqueline Benjamin, a 17-year MTA veteran, says she was repeatedly punched by a passenger while driving the B82 bus. Alicea Diaz of Coney Island, the woman accused of the assault, claims that the bus operator was driving too slowly and that was the source of the conflict, according to the New York Post. Assaulting a MTA bus operator is a felony in New York State punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
