Keep it down!

That’s what Mayor Bloomberg said!
Recently, two synagogues filed suit against the city and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz believing the popular Seaside Summer Concert Series at Asser Levy Park on Surf Avenue was violating noise code. Use of electronic sound amplification equipment within 500 feet of houses of worship during hours of worship is not acceptable the code states. Maybe you are wondering… concert series just finished its 31st season why are complaints coming out now?  Or maybe you believe in the separation of church and state? Or maybe you think this is not covered by the first amendment? Or why not move the concert series to MCU Park?

It seems to me that there is some ulterior motive involved here. Why else would any group or groups suddenly object to concerts in a public space after more than 30 years of having them there? And it’s not like these concerts go on during the winter. They are basically warm weather events. Do these groups also object to the amplified electronic noises that come from the amusement park as well? What if development continues and Coney Island becomes a totally thriving amusement area once again? Are they going to sue the city over that development? The city has been working toward that end for several decades now. Is this complaint going to put a halt to any progress that might be made in Coney Island? Should it be allowed to? This lawsuit sounds frivolous to me, and it sounds as if there is something more going on here than meets the eye. Mark my words, this lawsuit is a smokescreen so that these two groups will get more of a say over what goes on in the area. I would urge the residents of Coney Island to pay special attention to any issues involving “codes” and “local regulations.” Changes to either can effect what happens from here on out! It’s your neighborhood! You should get involved and protect it as best you can!

It’s obvious that the real reason is that no one wants the ampitheater built. The last concert was forced to be so low that it was not audible past the paid area. Markowitz screamed an apology into the mike but you could barely hear him.

Yet four days later at Dominic Recchia’s concert, it could be heard all the way to Brighton Second Street.

If Markowitz drops his ampitheater proposak or move it to vacant land in Coney Island, the protests will disappear.

Someone will always be unhappy. These synagogues may be having financial trouble and need money. Everyone is sue happy these days. If the concerts have been going on for 30 years than they shouldn’t complain now.
