Also: Vuvuzelas banned from contest audience!

From the press released issued by Major League Eating, the sanctioning body for the July 4 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest:

Takeru Kobayashi is currently not scheduled to compete in the 2010 Nathan’s Famous July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest. In recent weeks, Major League Eating has sought to arrive at an agreement with Kobayashi, but contract negotiations have reached an impasse. MLE remains hopeful that Kobayashi, who won the contest from 2001-2006, will decide to compete this July 4th in Coney Island, when Joey Chestnut will seek his fourth consecutive title.

A few thoughts:

  1. Major League Eating. That’s really what they want to call themselves, eh?
  2. They have contracts?
  3. They have labor disputes?????
  4. If Kobayashi doesn’t compete, then lets not kid ourselves here. Joey Chestnut will walk away with this one. Or maybe he’ll roll away with it…

More frustrating news from Major League Eating – vuvuzelas will be banned from the crowd! Boo! Why does Major League Eating hate The Beautiful Trumpet?

“We refuse to let vuvuzela use damage the competitive eating aesthetic,” said Richard Shea, president of Major League Eating, the governing body of all stomach centric sport worldwide. “As a result, these horns will be prohibited at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island on July Fourth.”

We refuse to let vuvuzela use… damage the… competitive. eating. aesthetic. Uh huh. That one speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

What do film stars Woody Allen, Eddie Murphy, Rhea Perlman, Steve Buscemi, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano, Jackie Gleason, the best comedy team of all times – the 3 Stooges (brothers: Moe, Shemp and Curly), musicians Lena Horne, Stephanie Mills, Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Carole King, Pat Benatar, Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Biggie Smalls, former New York Yankees and Mets manager Joe Torre, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, politicians Shirley Chisholm, who became the first black woman to be elected to Congress, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Joan Bader Ginsburg have in common? All were all born in Brooklyn.  “Judge Judy” Judith Sheindlin grew up in Brooklyn, Founder of the popular fitness club, Lucille Roberts, immigrated to Brooklyn from the then Soviet Union. Spike Lee was born in Atlanta and moved to Brooklyn at a young age while Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn and moved out at a young age (he could not handle it!)Spending portions of their childhood in Brooklyn are Lauren Bacall, Mickey Rooney, Mary Tyler Moore and Mae West. Ok Lets focus on South Brooklyn, Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld, was born in Sheepshead Bay. Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer and NFL legendary coach Vincent Lombardi grew up in Sheepshead Bay. In Brighton Beach singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka was born and Mel Brooks previously resided. The Neil Simon play, “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, film adaptation was set against the backdrop of Brighton Beach in 1937 and the films “Little Odessa” and “Two Lovers” are both set in Brighton Beach.  Perhaps the most famous residents of Coney Island are fictional. “The Warriors” Walter Hill’s 1979 GREAT cult classic film follows the progress of a street gang as they get framed for killing a powerful gang leader and then have to find, battle and fight their way from the Bronx  to home turf Coney Island with many different creative and artistic gangs chasing them. In Woody Allen’s 1977 classic “Annie Hall”, as a child Alvy Singer lived in Coney Island in a house that was built under the classic Thunderbolt rollercoaster that shook when in route. “The Great Gatsby” invites Nick (not Silver) to go to Coney Island. The 1917 film “Coney Island”, starring Buster Keaton, was set in Coney Island. The video for One of Us by Joan Osborne was shot in Coney Island. The Three Stooges made several references to Coney Island in there classic short comedy routines…and list goes on and on.

State Senator Marty Golden (R-Bay Ridge) will be holding a town hall on Tuesday, June 29 at the St. Finbar’s Center (Bath Avenue & Bay 20th Street). The town hall gets started at 7pm.

Will you be going? Are you not able to? What would you like to ask the Senator?

The new Bay Ridge bus map, effective this Sunday, June 27. The B37 is gone, the B70 is rerouted to compensate. The B1 and B64 switch places, and the B8 runs past the VA Hospital only late-night.

The doomsday cuts, the cuts that were not supposed to happen, are suddenly upon us because the State or the Federal government did not save us.  Doomsday is this Sunday. That is the day when Southern Brooklyn will lose the M-train and many bus lines, some entirely; other bus routes will lose overnight or weekend service, and some routes will be restructured. Click here for the new Brooklyn bus map, in effect starting Sunday, June 27.

The bus cuts, as they relate to Southern Brooklyn, are…

Express Buses

The X37, and X38 to Midtown will become part of the X27 and X28, respectively so that Midtown passengers will first get a sightseeing tour of Lower Manhattan adding about 15 minutes to their trip. The X29 that operates only during weekday rush hours will be eliminated entirely.

Reduced Hours

Weekend service will be lost on the B2, X27 and X28.  Overnight service will be lost on the B7, B31 and B64. The B9 and B16 will lose a few hours of service at the beginning and end of the day.

Shortened Routes

The B3 will be chopped off in Bergen Beach and will now terminate on Avenue U.  The B8 will be chopped at the VA Hospital (except during late nights when the B70 does not operate) instead of terminating at the 95th Street Station of the R-train in Bay Ridge.  The B64 will be chopped at 25th Avenue and will no longer serve Coney Island. The B4 will no longer operate on Neptune Avenue, but instead will use Avenue Z. It will also now terminate at Coney Island Hospital at all times when it operates, except on Monday through Friday between 7 AM and 10 AM and from 2 PM to 5 PM, when it will continue to serve Plum Beach.

Eliminated Routes and Restructured Bay Ridge Service

The B23 that operates along 16th Avenue and Cortelyou Road will be eliminated entirely.  The B37 will be eliminated, but the southern end of the B70 will replace it in Bay Ridge by being diverted from 8th Avenue to 3rd Avenue.  Finally, the B1 and B64 will swap routes with each other at 86th Street and 13th Avenue.  The B1 will continue along 86th Street to 4th Avenue while the B64 will serve southern 13th Avenue and western Bay Ridge Avenue.

Negative Impact – Overcrowding, Longer Waits, Longer Walks

Although a few modifications were made as a result of the public hearing held on March 3rd, these cuts are still devastating if your route is affected.  The R train will be overloaded at DeKalb Avenue and the D (West End) will be more crowded during rush hours.  Riders will be forced to endure longer walks.  Riders along Bay Ridge Avenue will also wait longer for a bus, since the B64 operates less frequently than the B1 that currently serves that street. Only a few people will benefit, those who travel along 86th Street will have a more direct trip if they have to cross 13th Avenue.  Some trips which previously required two buses to complete, will now require three buses, and for this privilege of having to take an extra bus, you will also be charged an additional fare if you don’t have an unlimited pass.

Lack Of Transparency Into Service Cut Rationale

While some cuts were probably necessary due to the MTA’s budget situation, the problem with these cuts is that a consistent methodology was not followed. The process was not transparent.  The MTA laid out criteria but never explained how they were used. The result was routes being eliminated which were more efficient than others that were retained.  For example the X27 and X28, eliminated on weekends are far more efficient than virtually every express route operated by the MTA Bus Company on weekends where weekend service is being retained.  The B4, which was originally going to be cut east of Coney Island Hospital at all times, has had some weekday service to Plumb Beach retained when it would have been more cost efficient to retain weekend service instead.

Since the MTA loses money for every rider it carries, it has no interest in making the system easier to use which would attract riders and necessitate more service. Instead, their goal is to provide less service, which reduces costs, but also reduces revenue by deterring riders, since the system becomes more difficult to use. At the same time, the City touts leave your car at home and use mass transit.

Brooklyn Dissed!

The summer is here and temperatures hit 90+ in spring so we are in for warm days in the naked city…I’ll get back to that in a minute. What could be better than going to Coney Island or Brighton Beach to cool off with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean? So I decided to see where these beaches ranked! From Beaches World, the World’s Top 10 Beaches are 1) Anguilla, Caribbean, 2) Barcelona, Spain, 3) Bora Bora, French Polynesia, 4) Fernando de Noronha, Brazil, 5) Harbour Island, Bahamas, 6) Mykonos Island Beach, Aegean Sea, 7) Oahu, Honolulu (what no Maui..where you can get some Maui wowie, 8) Palm Beach – Aruba, 9) Tulum Beach – Cancun, 10) Horseshoe Bay – Bermuda. Brighton Beach and Coney Island not mentioned…where else can you eat great Eastern European food overlooking the ocean at sunset…well maybe the Black Sea…where else can you ride the world’s most famous roller coaster and eat the world’s most famous hot dog? Ok maybe Coney or Brighton made the Top 10 USA Beaches for 2010: 1. Coopers Beach (Southampton, N.Y – WTF!! Those snooty bastards in LI are #1!), 2. Siesta Beach (Sarasota, Fla.) 3. Coronado Beach (San Diego, Calif.) 4. Cape Hatteras (Outer Banks, N.C.) 5. Main Beach (East Hampton, N.Y.) 6. Kahanamoku Beach (Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii) 7. Coast Guard Beach (Cape Cod, Mass – over Kalmus and West Dennis Beaches.) 8. Beachwalker Park (Kiawah Island, S.C.) 9. Hamoa Beach (Maui, Hawaii) 10. Cape Florida State Park (Key Biscayne, Fla.).. from Leatherman’s survey of 650 public beaches along the U.S. coast of the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific…uses 50 criteria for ranking beach quality, including sand softness, frequency of rip currents, size of waves, presence of shorebirds, water color, the presence of oil and tarballs, whether it’s overcrowded, public safety, maintenance of grounds and other factors… ok not mentioned in USA either!! Well the NY Daily News has Brighton/Coney as #4..should be #1! Ok back to the naked city…in case you were wondering…There are several nude beaches on Fire Island and discreet nudity is seen on isolated stretches of sand in between towns. Topless sunbathing, heard to be legal in NY state, happens on except at the busiest beaches. Gunnison Beach in Monmouth County is the only nude beach in New Jersey and the largest clothing-optional recreation area on the East Coast. Asbury Park is the news of date and is the first municipality to officially sanction a topless optional section beach — which would be located on the northern end of the beachfront away from homes and even the boardwalk. “It’s a person’s prerogative if they want to go topless,” Deputy Mayor and City Councilman John Loffredo said in an interview. “I really don’t see anything wrong with it.”… This is a list of the 10 most famous nude beaches of the world….Black’s Beach, San Diego, California; Bondi Beach Sydney, Australia; Clifton Beach Cape Town, South Africa; Forte Dei Marmi, Italy; Ibiza Spain; Ipanema-Copacabana Beach Brazil; Kuta Beach Bali; Margarita Island, Venezuela; St Tropez France; St Barts Beach;

The 8th inning defensive collapse is home to the best defensive play we’ll probably see all year. True story.

The Brooklyn Cyclones have opened up the season with two straight wins over the Staten Island Yankees – including Saturday night’s 9-6 home opening victory – before losing the third game Sunday night in St. George, 2-1.

The Baby Mets in action. Playing home games in the sea breeze of Coney Island has to beat playing home games in Jamestown.

Post-game fireworks!

The Village Voice has filled out the 14-band lineup for the 2010 Siren Festival with Holy Fuck and more. For the uninitiated: yes, Holy Fuck is a real band name. OK, so it isn’t the most popular or revered band in the lineup, but it is the most fun to say. (Go ahead – give it a try.) The Siren Festival takes place all day on Saturday, July 17, on two stages (W. 10th Street between the Cyclone and Luna Park, and Stillwell Avenue) near the Boardwalk. The full lineup is posted below and at the Village Voice.

In related news, The B-52s will be playing at the Thursday night concert series at Asser-Levy Seaside Park this August, but the Borough President’s office doesn’t want you to know that.

Marty Markowitz announced a Seaside Summer Concert Series lineup that includes Aretha Franklin, Belinda Carlisle, Brenda Lee, and George Thorogood & The Destroyers to a crowd at the YM-YWHA Israel festival last week. The full schedule is below, and the full details are available at news blog Sheepshead Bites.

As stated in the article, Markowitz asked Bites not to include the B-52s in the published lineup, for fear that the announcement may negatively impact sales of their July 6 appearance at the Highline Ballroom, a Manhattan music venue. But thanks to an “anonymous” commenter on Sheepshead Bites and “another” source contacted by BK Southie – “both” attendees of the YM-YWHA event – that information is now freely available.

On a personal note, I am glad to see Markowitz sees news bloggers such as Ned Berke at Sheepshead Bites as being on par with traditional media such as newspaper and TV reporters, and therefore expects bloggers to keep his secrets (especially publicly-announced secrets) from their readership, just like a traditional media reporter would.

“You’re not American, this is a Jewish neighborhood!” Thanks for the tip, Mack. Waaaay to keep it classy. Video by Sheepshead Bites

More Peace Walk and mosque opposition analysis. This video shows the supposedly not bigoted opposition but they seem disproportionately angry about traffic and zoning to me. And then there’s this:

Fifteen-year-old Kamela Elbassiony stood to the side of the construction site. Born in the United States, and living on Batchelder Street, the only hint to her Muslim background was the color of her skin. Before the walk, she didn’t know of the mosque. But as she walked over and saw the crowd, she asked what was going on. A woman against the mosque cursed at her, telling her Muslims weren’t welcome. Elbassiony stayed, and got a flag from the Peace Walkers, and stood in support of its establishment. (Sheepshead Bites)

  • I have a few questions about the black and Hispanic kids that were kicked out of Seba Avenue Park. Like, were they questioned by police, or just chased out of the park neighborhood? If they were trying to steal bikes, shouldn’t they have been arrested instead? At best, that sounds like horribly horrible police work. Don’t the police think the NFL’s policy of openness about officiating mistakes if better than FIFA’s “don’t ask, because we don’t care to tell you” policy? And why does Dan Cavanagh hate America? (GerritsenBeach.net)
  • Free Friday night fireworks at the Coney Island Boardwalk started this past weekend and go on through Labor Day weekend. (“Friday Night Fireworks” is not code for “exploding car.”) (Amusing The Zillion, Sheepshead Bites)
  • More on the bus cuts in Bay Ridge, which go into effect this weekend. (Bay Ridge Blog)

  • Um, yeah, I was kinda wondering about this. The busiest piece of Boardwalk real estate, the most hyped summer in recent Coney history, and the Parks Department can’t get its repairs in before summer starts? WTF? (Kinetic Carnival)
