One of the message board posters at ConeyIsland.com took some Wednesday night video of the construction. Damn, those lights look cool.

The latest pictures are on the message board. Looks like, as of late last night, paving has finally started. Opening day is set for this Saturday, May 29.

Good news! The Kings County Fair at the Aviator sports complex has been extended by a week, through Memorial Day Monday. The hours are the same as last week – 5pm-11pm Monday through Thursday, 5pm-1am Friday, noon-midnight Saturday, and noon-11pm Sunday. General admission is still $7 plus rides, with specials through the week.

I’m told that the energy-efficient Ferris Wheel needs only the same amount of power that would power a TV. No indication if that’s the fairly benign TV I have in my home now, or the 72″ power-hungry plasma I want to have on my wall.

With five days to go to the scheduled opening, we’re kinda wondering… it’s gonna be ready on time, riiiiight? Photo credit: Brian Hedden

Site news: Stephanie11229 is the newest member of the BK Southie writing team. You can probably expect Stephanie to write about the swath of land from Sheepshead Bay to Coney Island. She joins myself and Nick Silver as the current regulars here. Be sure to check out her first post and say hi!

I have a hunch that Luna Park will be dominating the South Brooklyn headlines this week, and into the next.

  • More on the hoisting of the Luna Park entrance sign. You know, it looks like it needs more than five days of work to me, but pretty much every we talk to that’s close to the situation says the park will be ready for this Saturday morning. I don’t seen any signs of doubt on the Coney Island Message Board (the usual prognosticator of doubt), and the company line is a Saturday opening, a brief closure next week for some extra finishing touches, and everything in place by mid-June. (Amusing The Zillion, Coney Island USA, Brooklyn Paper)
  • More on the return of the John Strong sideshow – the first north-of-Surf amusement in six years – and the two competing sideshows. (Amusing The Zillion)
  • The Mayor’s commitment to Coney Island has not diminished, even in the face of massive layoffs in other areas of City government, noticeably the Department of Education. Note – I’m not sure yet if the $130 million Coney budget cited in the article also includes the $64 million amphitheater planned at Asser-Levy Seaside Park, which may play host to heavy metal concerts. (NY Observer via Bay Ridge Journal, Brooklyn Paper)
  • I don’t imagine one slips in a Yamaha percussion set through a chain link fence on the sly, meaning Coney Island squatlord Horace Bullard granted actual permission to Metric to film the last 30 seconds of their latest music video in front of the Playland building on the old Thunderbolt site. Bullard, who has held the land (and done nothing with it) since the 1980s, put the site on the real estate market last month. (YouTube, Brownstoner)

Not all of the news is happening in Coney this week:

Today my seven-year-old son and I checked on the progress of the new Luna park, set to open this Saturday. On our way to the construction, we rode the Tilt-A-Whirl, and got our only good–if tilted and whirly–view. Luna Park’s main attractions are set rather firmly (very firmly I hope) in a six-foot deep pit, of dirt. There were also mounds of dirt.

Then we walked around to the east. I had little hope of getting some good images, because they spent so much money on site protection. Luckily, a door happened to be open.

No one's poured the concrete yet. Will Luna Park be ready?

My son and I walked around to the north side and stumbled upon a man in an orange vest who seemed to have some authority. He assured us the rides would be ready for the crushing crowds this Saturday morning. I wonder if they will have the concrete guys working day and night. How long will it take before someone believes a mobster is set in the concrete in Luna Park?

We had a real sign of hope as we were leaving. At least this looks ready. Whatever it is.

When you think of Coney Island what do you think of? “Nathan’s Hot Dogs”… “Cyclone roller coaster”…ok, think people.. “beach goers”… getting warmer but think of an organized group “Oh.. The polar bears”.. ok come out to the boardwalk…”Oh ya the Coney Island Dancers! ” Right! This multi-talented group has been performing on the boardwalk during the warm weather months for almost 15 years and always draws a crowd of interested viewers and picture takers. Near the New York Aquarium Brooklynites, tourists, sightseers, etc can easily find the artistic dancers….or just follow your ears to the beat and your eyes to the gathering. More information on the group is available at www.coneyislanddancers.com

The New York Road Runners will be holding their annual Brooklyn Half-Marathon tomorrow. It begins in Prospect Park at 7am, makes two laps within the park, and then heads down Ocean Parkway before crossing the finish line on the Coney Island Boardwalk behind MCU Park (map). I can see things getting a little tight in front of Ruby’s – as of Monday, the Parks Department is still working on the Boardwalk there, and still has half of it closed off for a couple of blocks. Probably should have tried harder to finish that up before running any marathons, half or otherwise, in that direction.

I’m guessing the top runners will leave Prospect Park around 7:40, and arrive in Coney Island shortly after 8pm. So if you want to see them, set your alarm early!
