Flatbush Artists Studio Tour 2009

The Flatbush Artists held their second annual studio open house this past weekend. I posted a few of my favorites below!

At the southern end of the open house footprint was the glass studio of Fran Levy. Pictured above are sushi plates. Sushi plates! I used to work as a junk mailer for a company that sold “collector” plates. Fran’s work is far more attractive, and they can be used as actual plates as well!

This is a flattened mini-bottle of vodka. Suck it, Absolut.

Some of the tools of the trade – ground glass, a tea strainer, dental tools.

And a kiln that makes Consolidated Edison a buck an hour.

These two pieces were on display in the gallery of Kris Waldherr near the Newkirk Plaza Q-train station. They are the work of Kristina Carroll – an artist I met two-and-a-half years ago at the Atlantic Avenue Artwalk. She was an assistant to Donato Giancola, who, more than scraping by with a day job to support his expensive art habit, has turned it into a well paying gig. This is the first time I had seen any of Kristina’s paintings, and all I have to say is… damn, they’re good.

These are by Kathy Levine – these are photos on cast sculptures and jewelry. (I did her studiomates Jessica Dias and Lebasi Lashley a tremendous disservice by not getting any photos of their works – they totally rocked and I wish I had something of theirs to put here.)

Sculpted wooden pendants by Zane Treimanis.

On display in the same location, this painting by Tom Hagan reminds me of a painting that my grandmother had on display in her home, both in terms of the painting style and the backwoods setting.
That’s all the art I have for now. Like I said last week – I’m glad to see this thing is still going!
